Clanton Police Department
SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY
In pursuit of its mission, the Clanton Police Department sets continuing goals, which include a commitment to:
Clanton Police Department officers are required to be APOSTC certified and maintain their certification by attending at least 12 CEU hours per year. At the present time the department is divided into three divisions: Patrol Division, Detectives Division, and the Task Force.
Deputy Chief Keith Maddox supervises both patrol and investigations and assists Chief Smitherman with administrative duties as needed, such as maintaining personnel files and making sure all officers are current on training and certification.
Captain David Clackley supervises the patrol division. The 21 employee division is primary responsible for patrolling city neighborhoods and business districts and answering calls for service. The officers work rotating 12 hour shifts that gives them more time with their families throughout the year.
Within the patrol division are several specialized officers who make up units including commercial motor vehicles, K-9, school resource, traffic homicide, code enforcement, park patrol, SWAT, and an animal control officer. The patrol division also maintains a roster of 10 part-time officers that are utilized for a variety of details throughout the city.
Captain Freeman Ellison supervises the detective division of 7 employees. Their primary responsibility is investigating felony crimes in the corporate limits of the municipality.
Specialized units in this division include detectives assigned to general crimes, and they handle all felony crimes against persons and/or property, as well as narcotics detectives who handle crimes involving the sale, use, trafficking, and distribution of controlled substance crimes. The Clanton Neighborhood Improvement Team is responsible for targeted enforcement of crimes in various areas of the city. 10 part-time officers who assist with ongoing cases and details complete the division.
The Clanton Police Department is part of a multi-agency task force in Chilton County that works together to combat narcotics throughout the entire community. Members of this task force also form a SWAT team in the event of a crisis or emergency situation.
The Clanton Police Department participates in numerous events throughout each year such as the Peach Jam Jubilee, Peach Parade, The Chilton County Fair, and National Night Out Against Crime, just to name a few. The Police Department is committed to providing the community with information and works hard to develop good relationships with it’s citizens.
