SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY
In pursuit of its mission, the Clanton Police Department sets continuing goals, which include a commitment to:
- Provide the public with reasonable and efficient access to public services.
- Be responsive to calls and identified needs for police services within The City of Clanton 24 hours a day.
- Allocate personnel to obtain maximum utilization of its human resources to meet identified needs.
- Provide staff services for the traditional line functions of the police.
- Maintain a proactive approach toward crime and disorder.
- Maintain flexibility in its strategies toward crime and disorder so that the changing needs of the community may be met.
- Identify criminal activity and act to resolve it.
- Maintain activities to facilitate the orderly flow of people and vehicles within the community.
- Maintain positive interaction with the public and a high degree of visibility within the community.
- Educate the public to the community's role and responsibility in the prevention, detection, and resolution of crime and disorder.
- Promote public confidence in the law enforcement function.
- Conduct an on-going evaluation of its functions and activities to ensure that community needs are being met.
- Utilize effective police-community partnerships to resolve problems collaboratively.
- Develop and maintain ethical and professional standards of conduct and operation.
Clanton Police Department officers are required to be APOSTC certified and maintain their certification by attending at least 12 CEU hours per year. At the present time the department is divided into three divisions: Patrol Division, Detectives Division, and the Task Force.
Deputy Chief Keith Maddox supervises both patrol and investigations and assists Chief Smitherman with administrative duties as needed, such as maintaining personnel files and making sure all officers are current on training and certification.
PATROL DIVISION
Captain David Clackley supervises the patrol division. The 21 employee division is primary responsible for patrolling city neighborhoods and business districts and answering calls for service. The officers work rotating 12 hour shifts that gives them more time with their families throughout the year.
Within the patrol division are several specialized officers who make up units including commercial motor vehicles, K-9, school resource, traffic homicide, code enforcement, park patrol, SWAT, and an animal control officer. The patrol division also maintains a roster of 10 part-time officers that are utilized for a variety of details throughout the city.
DETECTIVE DIVISION
Captain Freeman Ellison supervises the detective division of 7 employees. Their primary responsibility is investigating felony crimes in the corporate limits of the municipality.
Specialized units in this division include detectives assigned to general crimes, and they handle all felony crimes against persons and/or property, as well as narcotics detectives who handle crimes involving the sale, use, trafficking, and distribution of controlled substance crimes. The Clanton Neighborhood Improvement Team is responsible for targeted enforcement of crimes in various areas of the city. 10 part-time officers who assist with ongoing cases and details complete the division.
TASK FORCE
The Clanton Police Department is part of a multi-agency task force in Chilton County that works together to combat narcotics throughout the entire community. Members of this task force also form a SWAT team in the event of a crisis or emergency situation.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
The Clanton Police Department participates in numerous events throughout each year such as the Peach Jam Jubilee, Peach Parade, The Chilton County Fair, and National Night Out Against Crime, just to name a few. The Police Department is committed to providing the community with information and works hard to develop good relationships with it’s citizens.
