Clanton, Alabama

Building & Zoning

The Building Department is responsible for the permitting and inspection (code enforcement) of residential and commercial construction throughout the City. If you are unsure about whether or not you need a permit, contact the Building Department. To obtain a permit refer to PERMIT REQUIREMENTS located on this site.

Penalties: Where work for which a permit is required by the 2015 International Building Code is started or proceeds prior to obtaining said permit, the fees herein specified shall be doubled, but the payment of such double fee shall not relieve any person from fully complying with the requirements of the code in the execution of the work nor from any other penalties prescribed herein.

After completing the appropriate application it may be submitted along with the supporting documents to the Building Department. {Commercial and multi-family projects require a site plan review by the City of Clanton PLANNING COMMISSION prior to the issuance of a permit.) After an application is received in most cases a site visit will be made by the Department to ensure compliance of the site. Permits for residential and other applicants that do not require a site plan review may usually be obtained within one to two business days if all conditions are met.

Residential contractors must be licensed by the City of Clanton. Additionally, if the contract amount is $10,000.00 or more, they must be licensed with the State of Alabama HOME BUILDERS LICENSURE BOARD.

Commercial contractors must be licensed by the City of Clanton. Additionally, if the contract amount is $50,000.00 or more, they must be licensed by the ALABAMA LICENSING BOARD FOR GENERAL CONTRACTORS as a State of Alabama General Contractor.

An individual may act as his own contractor. However all code enforcement and inspections will be performed as if he is a licensed contractor. It shall be the responsibility of the contractor to request  inspections. All subcontractors shall be licensed by the City regardless of whether under lump sum or hourly wage.
